TELECOM REPORTER: The recent departure of Chris Stern to an investment research firm creates an opening for a telecommunications reporter on the Financial staff. This is a newsy, high-profile beat at the center of our technology coverage. The telecommunications industry is being roiled by change and new markets are emerging every day. Cable companies are getting into the phone business. Phone companies want to sell television service. Wireless companies have grown up overnight, and many businesses are beginning to route their calls over the Internet. Big companies that once seemed indomitable, including AT&T and MCI, are being buffeted by competition. The phone itself is morphing into a device that can send e-mail, take photos, play MP3's or do a little of each.

We are looking for a reporter who can chronicle this fast-changing marketplace by taking us inside the companies and regulatory agencies that are leading the charge. We want a graceful writer, someone equally adept at producing compelling narratives and hard-edge takeouts. This has traditionally been a busy beat, with lots of news breaking at any one time, and a successful reporter needs to have a keen ear and eye for the stories that matter. This is both a hard news and enterprise beat; we are seeking a reporter who is creative both in writing and in managing time. Five years experience covering business or technology topics is preferred, but we're willing to consider others who have strong breaking news and enterprise experience.

Candidates should contact Jill Dutt, 202-334-5445, Dan Beyers 202-334-7249, Kathy Tolbert 202-334-7277 or Lisa Frazier 202-334-6752 by Nov. 19.
