Help With the Big Decision

(and afterward)

WHO: At SPJ’s request, the highly respected firm of Carter Financial Management of Dallas has agreed to help Dallas Morning News folks figure out how to deal with buyouts, layoffs, retirement, and other looming financial issues.

WHAT: The folks from Carter provided some dynamite guidance after the News’ 2004 layoffs* -- for rolling over 401Ks, making the most of limited cash flow, and just surviving financially. They’ve agreed to provide the same kinds of information again, plus helping with some advice on buyouts and retirement issues.

The financial planners will take questions at the end of their presentation, but there won’t betime Thursday night provide individualized advice. However, information will be provided at the session explaining how to set up individual sessions.

WHEN and WHERE: We are planning to hold this in Room 283 in SMU’s Umphrey Lee Center (the journalism building) at 7 pm Thursday, Aug. 24. The building is located off Hillcrest Avenue between Dyer St. and McFarlin Blvd. There should be parking available in the lot adjacent to Umphrey Lee or nearby on the SMU campus.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO: As soon as you can, please let Steve McGonigle (smcgonigle@dallasnews.com) know if you plan to attend. This will affect how many copies of handouts we need to make and whether we need a larger room. The Carter folks have also asked, if possible, that those RSVP-ing give their ages and years of service – so they can better judge the demographics of the group they’ll be talking to.

WHY: Because SPJ wants to help. So do the folks at Carter. And because, ultimately, we’re all in this together.

DETAILS: Since we put this together quickly, we’re not planning on providing food or drink, except maybe bottled water. Many thanks to Craig Flournoy, Tony Pederson, Steve McGonigle, and particularly Bob Berg and his cohorts at Carter Financial Management, for helping make this happen.
